Oh, play dough. Just when we thought you couldn’t get any better…
You got better.
Now you’re helping the smalls remember things easier, you’re lifting their spirits, helping sooth their headaches, stimulating their immune systems, you’re even helping the smalls sleep better. The sleep better part is my favourite, by the way.
With just a few drops of pure, therapeutic essential oils, you have risen to a place of honour in this house, let me tell you.
We have used Young Living Essential Oils in our family for a year now. We have incorporated them into so many aspects of our daily living, I really don’t know how we got on before them. Myself and my kids are healthier, their tempers are softened, we sleep soundly, and owees are healed quickly. We use the oils every day.
Even in play.
Today, I made 4 batches of our favourite play dough recipe, each with its own colour and essential oil added to it, and each with its own special job…
Orange Play Dough…Did you know that orange essential oil is an anti-depressant? It also induces relaxation and reduces insomnia. I like it for its anti-aging properties!
Peppermint Play Dough…besides being a great digestive aid (which doesn’t help us if it’s in the play dough!), peppermint essential oil soothes headaches, increases our mental accuracy and is also antibacterial and antiviral.
Lemon Play Dough…lemon essential oils stimulates our immune system and also increases our clarity of thought. This is a great play dough choice for after nap time, or for an early morning activity. The scent is invigorating and refreshing.
Lavender Play Dough…the soothing, calming, balancing play dough. Also the play dough with one of my favourite oils. I also added some dried lavender blooms to the play dough for an extra sensorial bonus. This is a great choice for pre-nap, pre-bedtime, or “chill-out” time when tempers are rising.
The smalls love play dough. They love the “smelly” play dough even more. So if I can add health/emotional benefits to the art of playing with dough, I won’t hesitate.

Here’s our favourite Play Dough Recipe…
In a saucepan, add 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tsp cream of tartar (or alum). Mix. Turn burner on to medium heat. Add 1 cup water, food colouring of choice, and 1 tablespoon of cooking oil. Mix. Stir while cooking. Once the play dough has formed a soft dough ball, remove from heat. Turn onto the counter and knead.
*Add 10-15 drops of the essential oil of your choice AFTER the cooking process. I just poke little dents in the dough with my finger and drop the oil into the dents and then knead the dough before play.
